Loss
Vancouver Island
A beautiful sunset and one of few sea stacks on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The story behind this shot is rather interesting. This is the place where I lost some of my photography gear. Initially, I was set on a different composition, with my camera bag beside me. I was completely involved in framing a shot with this lone sea stack, and was not paying much attention to my surroundings, when a rogue wave came in and crashed, sweeping away my camera bag. Luckily, that afternoon I only had one camera body and one lens with me, but some expensive filters and shutter releases in my bag. Since this shot was taken late fall, the water temperature was low enough that got me hesitant whether I should jump in the ocean to retrieve my gear. Unfortunately, I decided not to as I did not want to end up with a cold. However, I have learned a valuable lesson - never leave your camera bag near water. Keep it at least 15 meters away from the water. You never know when a wave might come in.
