Frozen Shadows

Pine trees cast long shadows across the snow shortly after sunrise on an exceptionally cold winter morning. Overnight, temperatures plunged below −37 °C, and at the time of shooting it hovered around −32 °C. These extreme conditions, combined with blowing snow, gave rise to striking meteorological phenomena: a visible halo and sundogs around the sun, and an abrupt transition from clouded to clear sky. The latter marks a sharp boundary between two air masses with differing temperature and humidity.
The cold was so intense that my camera nearly stopped functioning. Each exposure lagged by nearly two seconds after pressing the shutter, and it took several more seconds for the image to appear on the screen. Despite the challenges, the shoot came together — and this photograph is the result. ©Copyright by Abedin Abedin
